Thanks so much for this amazing post! I was wondering at what age you recommend that they start coloring. My two and a half year old loves it but I read somewhere that at this age, it's too soon. What do you recommend?
Thanks!

Hi! My daughter is 18 months old. I'm unsure whether you recommend the jumbo crayons for babies to use a fist grip and their whole arm with, or whether you think it's best to go straight to smaller crayons -or other hand strengthening activities for now and no crayons at all! Thanks so much

Ticonderoga also has golf pencils. Is it the brand itself you have an issue with or are their golf pencils ok?

Hi
My son is 7 and he's been using the thick triangle Stabilo pencils with the indentations going all the way up it. Are these appropriate for a 7 year old? he struggles with writing a bit and handwriting is quite messy. My 11 year old's handwriting and pencil grip is even worse while my 10 year old daughter's handwriting is fine. I think it's because she loves drawing and colouring wheareas the boys do not. How can i help them improve handwriting? more colouring?

[…] I would caution against jumbo size crayons or pencils as these can promote too much open web space between the thumb and fingers. I would evaluate these on a child by child basis. See this post from Miss Jaime. O.T. for more information on jumbo-sized crayons or pencils. […]

HI Fikile. I know that Handwriting Without Tears firmly supports and recommends the use of small pencils and crayons for kindergarten children. Unfortunately, I haven't found research to support or argue that point. My personal preference for school-aged children is always smaller unless the child's grasping skills are severely limited.
