More Than Packing a Bag: Preparing for a Smooth Summer Trip with Your Child

Summer travel tips start here, because summer is a fantastic time for family adventures! If you have a child with special needs, creating a travel plan might seem daunting at first. But fear not, with a little preparation, you can create a memorable vacation for everyone!

Before you go on the trip

Create a social story. Is your child unfamiliar with your travel destination? New places can be overwhelming. To ease their anxiety, create a social story together several weeks before your trip. This story should explain in simple terms where you’re going, how you’ll get there (plane, car, etc.), and what activities you’ll be doing. Include details about the environment (beach, mountains, city), routines (mealtimes, bedtime), and anything else that might be new. The goal is to familiarize them with the upcoming experience and avoid surprises that could cause stress.
Create a calendar. Now that your child knows about the upcoming trip, mark it on a special calendar with a big, bright sticker. Each day leading up to the trip, you can cross off a day together. This visual countdown helps them understand the passage of time and builds excitement for the vacation!
Packing: Pack clothes your child loves wearing, prioritizing comfort over fashion. Include their favorite security blanket or stuffed animal. Create a packing list together with pictures or use simple written words. Let them help check things off as you pack. This builds on fine motor skills, visual perception, and participation. Folding and packing clothes can be challenging. Break it down into smaller steps and allow extra time for them to process each step. Offer guidance and praise their efforts.
Trial run: Is this their first trip to a crowded or loud place? If so, practice adapting to a stimulating environment beforehand. Try taking them to a new store or restaurant and see what strategies might help them feel comfortable. Noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, or other calming tools could be beneficial.
Traveling by plane? Aim for a direct flight if possible. Download entertainment options beforehand, and consider a portable charger. Research the airplane amenities (screens, outlets) beforehand. TSA security can feel overwhelming. To prepare, practice going through airport security at home with role-playing.
Don’t let worries hold you back! While traveling with a child with special needs can be challenging, the benefits often outweigh the difficulties. Even typical children struggle with new environments. With good planning, you can create a positive travel experience for everyone.

Flying to your destination

Arrive early: Plan to get to the airport significantly before your flight time, especially with a sensory seeker. This allows ample time for security checks and lets your child expend energy.
Movement Breaks: Look for designated walking areas within the terminal to allow your child to move around and release pent-up energy before boarding. Exercise or move your body for 20 minutes before the trip.
Boarding Options: Inform the gate attendant you’re traveling with a child with special needs. Discuss boarding options – consider boarding first to get settled quickly, or last to minimize waiting time in the crowded cabin.
Prepare for Takeoff: Pack lollipops or chewable items to help equalize ear pressure during takeoff and landing.
Entertainment Arsenal: Download games, apps, and shows beforehand to keep your child engaged during the flight.Consider bringing familiar toys and a visual countdown timer to show remaining flight time.
Snacks & Backup Power: Pack plenty of travel-friendly snacks and a backup charger for electronic devices.

Road tripping to your destination

Beat rush hour: Consider leaving early in the morning before rush hour starts, or late at night after it ends. This will minimize time spent in congested traffic.
Frequent Stops: Plan for plenty of breaks throughout your trip, especially for a long journey. This allows your child to stretch their legs, use the restroom in familiar settings (gas stations, rest stops), and expend energy.
Start Small, Build Confidence: Take shorter road trips before embarking on your big adventure. This helps your child get accustomed to being in the car for extended periods and builds excitement for the main trip.
Bathroom Practice: If using public restrooms is a concern, practice beforehand at familiar locations like parks or libraries. This can ease any anxiety they might have.
Pack for Entertainment: Ensure all devices are charged, bring a portable charger, and pack a variety of snacks to keep everyone happy. Games like I-spy or license plate spotting can add fun and engagement to the ride.

Keep activities within reach with a back-of-the-front-seat organizer for easier travel on a long trip or around town. Alternate toys often from an ‘undisclosed location’ in the back. It’s fun to keep some toys that are ONLY for the car!

With a little planning and preparation, you can create a summer vacation that’s both fun and manageable for the whole family, including your child with special needs. By using social stories, packing strategies, trial runs, and other tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for everyone. So pack your bags, embrace the adventure, and get ready to make some unforgettable summer memories!

If you’ve ever worked with or parented a child with autism, you know how overwhelming loud or unpredictable noises can be for them. The right pair can help a child feel more in control, stay focused, and reduce sensory overload.

Noise Cancellation 101: Passive vs. Active

Not all noise-canceling headphones are created equal. There are two main types:

Passive Noise Cancellation – This is the simpler option. Thick ear cups and sound-isolating materials physically block out external sounds. They’re great for reducing moderate noise levels and tend to be more budget-friendly.

Then, there is the Best Option! These Loop Switch 2 ear loops are adjustable! Around $60, but they offer 3 different levels of noise reduction. This is an option I’d recommend for adults, or parents buy for their children. The best news: NO batteries. NO charging. BUT would keep kids lose them if you don’t have a cord attachment? Consider all the options.

Sensory kids can be tricky.

Different kids can like or dislike different sensations. I like to recommend weighted things because I find that they can be calming and grounding for children who are sensory seeking, anxious, impulsive, or hyperactive. They can also be used as “heavy work” for kids who need to “wake up” or get moving.

Picking out a gift can be so frustrating.

This year I thought I’d make a quick list of my top favorite NEW sensory toys – ones that are unique and probably not already in your child’s toy box.

A Weighted Teddy Bear

This weighted teddy bear is too adorable. It looks like a typical toy but provides a weighted sensation that can be comforting. Click the image to learn more!

Emotions Putty

Changes color as you squeeze it, encouraging kids to twist, pull, and squeeze. You can put it in the freezer, too. The colors are engaging and fun. I love putty because it gets those fingers nice and strong!

Vibrating Sensory Toys

So many of my students love toys that vibrate. This fox is rated for babies and young kids, but it’s tactile and has lots of different textures for fidgety fingers. Adorable!

The Desk Buddy

This is such a great gadget for homework time. If you’ve got a wiggly, fidgety kid, try the desk buddy. Your child can use it for tactile input and appropriate “fidgeting” while remaining seated for homework time. Many parents have sent one in for the classroom, too.
