I walked in with printed copies of the two bills and the NYSUT resolution that are currently pending, ready to talk about the pressing issues facing school OTs and PTs in New York.

What I discovered? This well-meaning elected official knew basically nothing about NYSED or how our roles actually work in schools.

I found myself explaining inequities he’d never considered – how we can’t become educational leaders despite our advanced degrees and expertise, how that limitation directly impacts our ability to help kids, and how many of us are stuck on civil service pay scales that leave us making $30,000 less annually than our teaching colleagues.

The moment that really got to him? When he glanced at my daughter happily building with Legos and I said, “We have the same expenses as all the other teaching staff, and our education costs more.”

While Occupational Therapists (OTs) are familiar figures in special education, their partners—Occupational Therapy Assistants—remain somewhat invisible heroes in the educational support system. Many administrators, teachers, and even parents are unaware that OTAs:

2025 Trends: How OTAs Are Transforming MTSS Implementation

The school setting is the second most common practice area for OTAs (Spielman, 2019). This year has seen several notable trends in how schools are leveraging OTAs within their MTSS frameworks:

1. Integration into Universal Screening Teams

OTAs are increasingly included in universal screening processes, bringing their expertise in fine motor, visual-motor, and sensory processing assessment to identify students who might benefit from targeted support before academic difficulties emerge.

2. Tech-Enhanced Interventions

In 2025, OTAs are utilizing adaptive technology tools to enhance their interventions. As our students increasingly rely on their Chromebooks and iPads, OTAs are embracing technology to make therapy more engaging and effective.

3. Collaborative Push-In Services

Rather than pulling students out for therapy, OTAs are pushing into classrooms, providing support during normal instructional time. This approach not only reduces stigma but ensures strategies are implemented in the actual environments where skills will be used. Seeing children in their natural learning environment is best practice.

4. Data-Driven Decision Making

Today’s OTAs are skilled in collecting and analyzing progress monitoring data, allowing MTSS teams to make informed decisions about when to intensify, modify, or fade supports.

5. Whole-Child Wellness Approaches

OTAs are increasingly taking a holistic approach, addressing not just fine motor and sensory needs but also supporting social-emotional learning, proactive mental health approaches, executive functioning, and overall wellness within MTSS frameworks.

Building an Effective OT/OTA Partnership Within MTSS

The most successful schools utilize a collaborative model where:

OTs conduct comprehensive evaluations and develop intervention plans

OTAs implement daily interventions across all three tiers

Both professionals collaborate with teachers to embed strategies into classroom routines

OTAs collect ongoing progress monitoring data

The team meets regularly to analyze data and adjust interventions

This partnership model maximizes the specialized skills of both professionals while ensuring more students receive timely, appropriate support.

Beyond the Individual: How OTAs Support Systemic Change

Perhaps the most significant contribution OTAs make to MTSS is their ability to effect systemic change. By working across tiers of support, OTAs help schools:

Create universally designed learning environments that reduce barriers for all students

Develop teacher capacity to support diverse learners

Implement evidence-based practices consistently

Foster inclusive school cultures that celebrate neurodiversity

Build sustainable systems that support students’ developmental needs

The beauty of having OTAs involved in our MTSS process is that they think beyond the individual child. They help us create classrooms where fewer students struggle in the first place.

Looking Ahead: The Future of OTAs in Educational Settings

As schools continue to recognize the value OTAs bring to MTSS frameworks, we can expect to see:

Expanded roles for OTAs in curriculum development and teacher professional development

Increased collaboration between OTAs and other support professionals

Greater inclusion of OTAs in school leadership and MTSS decision-making teams

More research documenting the effectiveness of OTA-supported early intervention

Growing demand for OTAs with specialized pediatric and educational training

Conclusion: The OTA Advantage

As schools strive to create truly inclusive environments that support every child’s development, Occupational Therapy Assistants are proving to be essential team members in effective MTSS implementation. Their unique combination of specialized training, practical skills, and collaborative approach makes them ideally suited to support our youngest learners during their most formative years.

By leveraging the often-overlooked talents of OTAs, schools can create more responsive, effective support systems that identify and address challenges early—ultimately helping more children reach their full potential.

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)

I attended an awesome session presented by Deanna Bourgeois, OTD, OTR/L & Gina Benavente, DHSc, MPH, OTR/L, called, “Creating a Virtual Educational Resource to Promote Neurodiversity Affirming Sensory Interventions.”

I was eager to learn more about neurodiversity and the interventions that were recommended.

During the session, the speakers reported some info about ABA that I was surprised to hear.

They spoke about Autism “masking” and how ABA was a Non-Occupational

Therapy Approach with “ableist expectations.”

Leadbitter, K., Buckle, K. L., Ellis, C., & Dekker, M. (2021). Autistic self-advocacy and the neurodiversity movement: Implications for autism early intervention research and practice. Frontiers in Psychology, 12 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.635690

ABA is no longer deemed the “Go-to” way to work with children with Autism. The American Medical Academy changed their recommendations on the technique—because autistic adults are advocating that ABA is traumatic. WOW.

The American Medical Academy received a proposal to consider the removal of ABA therapy but they did not remove support for ABA. They expanded their endorsement so that instead of endorsing ABA specifically, they endorse use of “evidence-based treatments.”

You can read more about that here: https://www.casproviders.org/news/correcting-the-record-the-ama-did-not-remove-support-for-aba##

Both of these articles were new to me—and I highly recommend that you read them if you work with the autistic population.

In New York, the Board of Regents calls on all schools to develop policies that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion as a priority in their schools.

For example, in New York State’s ESSA Plan and Career Ladder Framework aspire to offer school leadership opportunities, provide career advancement opportunities, and raise the diversity of the workforce to support student learning (NYSED, 2020b; Rafal-Baer, n.d..).

To become an administrator in the NY State public school system, a person must be educationally credentialed. This means they have a “teaching certificate” under the Office of Teaching Initiatives. The other SISPs (social workers, guidance counselors, psychologists, and speech and language pathologists) have a pathway to leadership positions because they are categorized as pupil personnel or classroom teachers within the NYSED.

School-based occupational and physical therapy providers in most states are not included in the pupil personnel category with the other Specialized Instructional Support personnel (SISP), which obstructs the pathway to leadership positions.

This leads to pervasive inequity for OTs and PTs, including but not limited to how we are hired, our pay scales, retirement, and pension availability. This impacts the recruitment and retention of highly qualified, experienced, and effective OT and PT professionals.

The COVID-19 pandemic did not affect my salary. I also have sick days and school vacations included in my salary schedule. When I was a contractor, I would have to balance my money very carefully in the months that included a week off—because that meant I only got paid for three weeks, not four. And I had to find another job for the summer, because I couldn’t go two months with no income.

But that doesn’t stop me from being grateful to be in a union position. This guarantees me certain protections that I would never have as a contract therapist.

Working as a civil service employee offers stability/job security (so you are less likely to face being downsized). Flexibility and time off (holidays, leaves, and vacation time) is a huge perk for individuals and families.

My excuses were:

It costs too much

I’d have to miss work

None of my friends were going/I wouldn’t know anyone

But, my old roommate from college asked me if I was interested in attending #AOTA15 in Nashville.

YES! I’d been dying to go to Nashville, it was a chance to hang out with my former partner-in-crime for a few days, so I was totally in.

If you’re a foodie, plan to do your research on famous or fabulous restaurants!

History buffs can check out the local historical sites and take a selfie or two!

Also, check to see if the location offers a City Pass package to take advantage of great discounts on all the sights.

The annual AOTA conference is a great opportunity to meet up with friends from university, colleagues from previous jobs, and professors from the old days. Social media makes it easy to stay in touch afterward, too. Plan to share a hotel room with your roommate from college. It will be just like old times!

You are not an island! many OT practitioners work alone or with only a PT. It’s awesome to have another OT to trade ideas with, share activities, and collaborate on meeting goals—together!

Going to #AOTA will put you into “OT shock!” OTs are everywhere—in the elevator, next to you at the restaurant, and most of all, sitting next to you at the conference. It’s AWESOME. And it’s so nice to “talk shop” with other OTs.

AOTA has an app where you can plan out your conference schedule. You can enjoy multiple workshops each day on the topics you’re interested in. You can customize each day to your liking, and there are hundreds of courses to choose from.

AOTA hosts courses to keep you up-to-date with changes in law, best practice guidelines, and the latest research. For OT students, there are sessions about exam preparation and ethics in the workplace. Check out the app here.

This is one of my favorite parts of the AOTA conference. Hundreds of companies gather to persuade thousands of OTs to try products, buy books, sign up for courses, etc. Plus, there are tons of free giveaways, prizes, and samples. Who doesn’t love free samples?

Everyone has different Occupational Therapists that they admire or look up to. As a pediatric Occupational Therapist, I was thrilled to meet Theresa Garland, author of one of my favorite OT books, Self-Regulation Interventions and Strategies.

As a pediatric OT blogger (MissJaimeOT), I was totally psyched to meet two fellow OT bloggers, Christie Kiley (MamaOT) and Katherine Collmer (Handwriting With Katherine). Christie lives in California and Katherine is from Arizona—a long way from my home in New York.

As a result of the AOTA conference, I had the opportunity to meet them in person! Now, I’m in touch with both of them, and Christie and I actually collaborated with other OTs and PTs to write “The Handwriting Book.” For me, these are “famous OTs,” but that would depend on what kind of OT YOU are and who YOU’RE excited to meet. Chances are they’ll be at the #AOTA annual conferences!

8. Rediscover why you chose to be an OT practitioner.

Attending the conference will make you excited about OT again. If you’re feeling bored or unmotivated, AOTA Expo will have you on fire with ideas and things you’re looking forward to doing. The enthusiasm is contagious! Connecting with other practitioners is invigorating, and listening to their ideas and success stories can revitalize your role as a practitioner.

Love OT again!

#AOTA16 keynote speakers were Jessica Kensky & Patrick Downes, two survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. The couple had the audience laughing, crying, and speechless during their 30-minute presentation outlining their traumatic ordeal, recovery, and experience with their Occupational Therapists, who “helped give our independence back, our lives back, our love back.”

Listening to that speech was one of the highlights of my career as an OT, and it made me very proud of the profession I chose. I highly recommend seeing it for yourself on YouTube.

And every year there’s someone who reignites the fire in me and propels me forward, striving to work smarter and help more people.

Bring your new knowledge back to your organization. Turn-key teach other OTs and professionals. It’s a wonderful way to showcase your new proficiency and expertise. Administrators will admire your eagerness to promote your profession. Plus, it may make them more willing to pay for you to go the following year!

Bring breakfast food or book at a hotel that has continental breakfast—the lines are always crazy.

Bring water and healthy snacks (or buy when you get there at a local CVS, etc.) that you can carry through the day (granola bars, etc).

Bring business cards because there is a lot of networking. Make reservations ahead of time at “good” places with your friends because those places get booked up quickly.

Definitely attend the keynote speech—they are unbelievable. Try to book with friends because it is sooo much fun!

See if your college is having any kind of get-together—also great for networking opportunities.

Bring your phone charger to the conference daily because it’ll make your life easier when your battery is low and you can’t access the app, or text your friends for meet-ups.

Bookmark the sessions you’re interested in and plan out your days.

Find out if your workplace provides reimbursement for conferences and put in early.
