Description

Is this child on track for handwriting, or do they need more support? These posters give you the answer at a glance.

The Developmental Progression of Handwriting Posters walk through each stage of writing development in order, from the first scribbles to writing sentences and short paragraphs. Each poster shows the typical age a child can imitate a stroke (watch you make it, then make one) and copy it (look at a model and make one on their own). Each also includes a practical tip, like when to move from fat crayons to regular crayons or when to try small crayon pieces to encourage a better grasp.

Posters included:

  • Spontaneous Scribbling (1–2 years)
  • Vertical Lines
  • Horizontal Lines
  • Circle Shape
  • Cross Shape
  • Square Shape
  • Right & Left Diagonals
  • X Shape (5 years)
  • Capital Letters (Pre-K and Kindergarten), with the letters grouped in a developmentally friendly teaching order
  • Lowercase Letters (recognize in Pre-K, write in Kindergarten), also grouped in teaching order
  • Air Writing (all ages), with tips for modeling so letters are formed correctly from where students sit
  • Writing Words & Short Sentences (Kindergarten)
  • Writing Sentences & Short Paragraphs (First Grade)

Bonus: a one-page Progression of Pre-writing Strokes chart that shows every stroke by age in a single view, plus a references page grounded in established OT sources, including the Beery VMI.

Hang them on a bulletin board, keep them at your desk as a quick reference, or share them with parents and teachers to explain why a child isn’t ready for lowercase letters yet. They’re great for OT evaluations and goal writing, preschool and kindergarten classrooms, parent education, and teacher in-services.

Instant digital download. Designed to print on US Letter size paper. License is for use by one OT practitioner, parent, or teacher with all of their children.
