Yoga is my absolute favorite way to exercise. I also love to recommend yoga for kids. Years ago I got into yoga as a form of exercise and stress relief. I ended up loving it so much that I was certified to teach “Group Exercise” through the American Aerobics Association with the hopes of teaching yoga as a hobby. I did that for a year and liked it very much but decided that I like being a member of a class more than I like being the instructor. However, I am a huge believer in the old saying “everything happens for a reason”. I learned yoga well enough to teach it and to combine it with my “OT” knowledge, which really helped me to use yoga as a therapeutic activity with my students.

I love to recommend Yoga as a hobby for my students. It is perfect for kids who:

  1. Don’t enjoy/can’t keep up in competitive sports
  2. Need to strengthen their core, postural muscles, and the rest of their body
  3. Have attention issues, focusing, loss of concentration
  4. Have difficulty following directions
  5. Have digestive issues
  6. Have anxiety and/or depression
  7. Have difficulty socializing

Yoga really does work on everything. I also love the new trend of Aerial Yoga or Antigravity Yoga. A few months ago I observed an aerial yoga class in Long Island and was totally floored by how many skills were addressed in a hammock!

Aerial yoga can be beneficial for children with sensory processing disorder, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, low tone, and more.

There are many therapeutic benefits to practicing yoga. It can help a child’s gross and fine motor coordination, increase social skills, and reduce hyperactivity.

In my research, I found that some yoga instructors are specifically certified to teach kids by theYoga Alliance. Learn more about that here…

So anyway!  Here are some places in Long Island that have Yoga classes specifically geared towards children. Please let me know if you know of other places that offer classes. My goal with the Long Island Links posts is to offer Long Island parents and families go-to resources for things just like this!

Disclaimer: I have not been paid to promote any of the businesses below. I also am not affiliated with them. This is simply a list based on my research. It is up to you to decide if this facility meets your needs.

Please let me know if there are any other yoga places that you know of!
